Treatment that is motivational, not confrontational.
The Washton Group offers personalized treatment for adolescents and young adults including high school students, college students, early career professionals, and those who may be temporarily stuck while trying to figure out their path forward.
Unlike standard treatment programs, we do not utilize a one-size-fits-all approach. With all new clients, our first and foremost goal is to establish a positive therapeutic relationship that instills trust and encourages them to consider the possibility of change.
Our approach is motivational not confrontational. We provide individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy based on what is needed and what appears to make the most sense. We treat substance use problems involving alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, opioids, and other drugs. And, we offer help for a variety of other problems that can negatively affect a young person’s quality of life and future plans including anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationships, trauma, etc.
As psychologists, we have the professional expertise to address not only substance use issues, but also the emotional and psychological issues that underlie and fuel this behavior. Our integrated approach is based on meeting every young person, “where they are” with individually tailored treatment that is respectful, resourceful and empowering.
We work with clients on two levels: First, we will provide them with a toolbox of practical strategies to help manage problem behaviors including substance use and other risky acting-out behaviors that threaten their current and future health. Secondly and often simultaneously, we will identify and address the underlying emotional and psychological issues that contribute to substance use and other dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors.
Guidance and support for parents
We offer guidance and support for family members and significant others of clients currently under our care. Unlike addiction treatment facilities, we do not offer a pre-formulated family program. We offer private, confidential help that is tailored to the needs of each family and/or couple. What’s more, we adhere to a distinctly positive therapeutic approach that stands in sharp contrast to traditional heavy-handed “tough love” tactics. We help family members let go of ineffective tactics such as nagging, pleading, and threatening – which are often borne of desperation and exasperation – and provide them with a toolbox of positive strategies that are more likely to yield positive results.
Our first goal is to develop a rapport with the primary client and establish a good working relationship. With the primary client’s consent, we seek to involve family members in the therapeutic process as soon as it seems practical and clinically appropriate. We will schedule an initial consultation with family members (together with the primary patient) and then a series of family/couples sessions, as needed. The focus of these sessions is to align goals, improve communication, and work through whatever stuck points or barriers may arise.
