Taking a positive step forward starts with scheduling an appointment to come see us for an initial consultation. You will be seen personally by either Dr. Arnold Washton or Dr. Lori Washton for a totally confidential one-on-one assessment interview. The interview is intended to help us gain an understanding of what has brought you to this point, what you might want to change, what might be some potential obstacles to change, what are realistic short-term goals, and, what treatment options can best help you to achieve those goals.
The format of the interview is simple. We will ask you lots of questions about yourself, your life circumstances, your personal history, and previous attempts you may have made to grapple with the problems you are now seeking to resolve– all aimed toward helping us gain a clearer more in-depth understanding of you, your needs, and what might be the best path forward. You too will have an opportunity to ask a lot of questions so you can gain a sense of who we are, how we think, and how we might be able to best help you going forward. In addition to gathering important information and discussing treatment options, the initial consultation is often the start of a process that enhances your optimism and hope about achieving your desired goals by embracing a treatment plan that feels right to you.
Taking the next step
Toward the end of the initial consultation, we will discuss the specifics of an initial action plan for taking the next step, if you are ready to proceed. This plan may include individual therapy, group therapy, couples/family therapy – or other perhaps other options. With regard to substance use, the goals of treatment can range from total abstinence, to risk reduction, to moderation– based on what goals you decide to pursue. With your written consent, it may be helpful for us to communicate with other caregivers currently providing you with other services (e.g., individual therapy, medication, etc.) so we can properly coordinate your care. We welcome opportunities to collaborate with other caregivers to help maximize the benefits of the specialized treatment services that we provide. If you need services that go beyond what we can provide here, such as medication or residential (inpatient) treatment, we will supply you with a referral for the needed services.
In preparation for this interview, we will ask you to fill out our extensive New Patient Questionnaire and bring it with you to the interview. This questionnaire covers a wide range of topics including your personal/family history, treatment history, and current issues of concern. Filling out this questionnaire serves a dual purpose. It provides us with lots of preliminary information about you so we can devote the interview to having a conversation with you instead of just gathering factual information and, secondly, it helps to prompt you to think in greater depth about certain issues that will be important to discuss in our first meeting. read on.
